Every successful achievement in life is obtained by mastering three main areas:

  • Personal Development.
  • Power Brokering.
  • Mental Health.

Personal Development.

This is mastery of one self. The majority of people in todays society have not mastered this area of their life. Instead, they’re living in a state of perpetual reaction. This type of living surrenders control of their own lives to the whims of others. Others who will use the opportunity to make their own life better.

Power Brokering.

Power Brokering is simply using a strong level of influence on key decision makers in order to gain a desired outcome. Being a third generation Power Broker, this is something Paul has used countless times to win conflicts with major companies. And he wins the majority of the time.

Mental Health.

It goes without saying that our Mental Health is important. Anxiety, depression, addiction. Paul has not only lived with them, he’s grown from them. When he speaks on mental health, like his other topics, he speaks from lived experience.

PAUL ANSWERS TOP 10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

How will you customize your presentation to our specific audience and goals?

First, I would like to ask you about your audience’s demographics and psychographics. Second, I would customize the presentation to the event theme. Third, I would also, if possible, socialize with audience members the day of the event and BEFORE I go on stage to learn more about them and tailor my presentation on the fly to connect better with those in attendance.

What are the key, actionable takeaways for my audience?

It depends on the presentation itself. Let me answer this one with a simple list.

Power Brokering

  • Why companies delay things.
  • What motivates them into action.
  • Regulatory agencies that are on the ‘consumers’ side.
  • How to use the regulatory agencies as a powerful persuasion tool.

Personal Development

  • Self-Discovery (aka, finding oneself. Great for High Schools and Colleges).
  • How to improve their Self-Concept.
  • Knowledge of ideologies and actions needed for reaching personal goals.
  • Power of giving back, and the dangers of not doing so.

Mental Health

  • Statistical Data.
  • Thoughts, beliefs, and emotions of those of us living with mental illness.
  • Warning signs to watch for in themselves (and healthy ways to address them).

How do you engage the audience during your session?

Audience participation and Q&A during the session itself. Plain and simple. It’s been my experience that audiences forget what they’ve heard but remember what they’ve experienced. I want people to remember. In order for them to remember, they don’t need a simple presentation. They need an immersive experience.

What is your audio/visual requirement, and how flexible are you with technical, last-minute changes?

My audio/visual requirements depend on the presentation and the event itself. As far as technical flexibility and last minute changes, I’m flexible. Let’s be honest here. Sometimes tech works and sometimes it doesn’t. Or as we used to say back in my camera operator days, ‘tech happens’.

During one of my earliest presentations, back in 2007, the facilities projector went out – mid presentation. Did I panic? No. I simply used the situation as an opportunity to insert a humor point (something every presentation should have by the way) and rolled with the punches by talking on points that didn’t need to be explained with a slide while their tech team fixed the projector. Once the projector was working again, the audience and I used the projector outage as a means to connect.

Flexibility? You have to have it. Because sometimes… ‘tech happens’.

Are you willing to participate in extra activities (e.g., book signing, VIP lunch, panel, cocktail hour)?

ABSOLUTELY! In fact, I prefer to do activities with attendees when not on stage. In my view, a speaker’s there to help people. Not just go on stage and hide in their hotel rooms afterwards.

What is your fee, and what exactly does it include?

In short, my fees vary. Fees are based on several factors. For-profit and verifiable 501(c)3 events are billed at different rates so if your event is a verifiable 501(c)3, let me know (spoiler alert, you’d get a discount). Locations can differ the price as well. For example, if the event is in a preferred location, I’d be willing to go easy on the price. Either way, Alternate Methods of Compensation (AMOC) are always considered. If I need to provide my own equipment (Lav mic, projector, amplified speakers, etc.) then there’s an additional fee for equipment usage. Needing to provide my own equipment very rarely happens, but it has happened so I thought I’d mention it.

In all situations, a non-refundable deposit of 50% is required to lock the event on my calendar. The remaining 50% is due two weeks (14 calendar days) before the event begins. If the event planner takes care of the transportation arrangements and costs, then there’s no transportation fee or administrative fee associated with arranging the transportation itself. Lodging, however, is always arranged, and covered by the event planner directly.

I don’t charge for phone calls related to setting up the event. I know – that’s weird. That someone would charge for that. But I know some speakers who actually charge for… phone calls. I mean, come on. It’s just a simple phone call.

Anyway…

The best way to get a better understanding on the price is to contact me directly. Give me a call and we’ll work something out.

Do you have supplemental, post-event materials?

Yes. Most of my events are workshops or seminars in which I provide both handouts and note-packets. For small events, I bring the handouts myself. For large events, I send the files to the event planners to print out and supply. Typically for events that are large enough to require the event planner to mass print the handouts, I split the printing cost (50/50) with the event planner and have my half credited to the event planners account which lowers the remaining 50% owed (post deposit).

Can you tell me about your experience with our specific industry or audience?

It totally depends on your industry or audience. The presentations I give are intended to help people with self-worth, personal development and educate them on how to power broker through the brick walls companies give people on a daily basis. And they’re all based on my own personal experience. If you want to know more about what my personal experience encompasses, visit my About Page and learn what lived experience I bring to the table. Now, that said, my presentations may or may not be a good fit for your event or your audience. If you’d prefer, we can do a phone call or Zoom to help you better decide if I’m a good fit or not.

That said, I do want to mention that if my presentation topic is a good fit for your event, I’d prefer to customize it to the event itself. Why? I don’t do ‘one-size-fits-all’ presentations. I treat my presentations like a fine automobile. You can customize a Rolls Royce’s features, paint, and even its interior. But I wouldn’t take a Rolls-Royce off roading. My presentations are like a luxury car. Customizable, but not meant go down every road.

Let’s talk and see if my Rolls-Royce is a good fit for your event or audience.

What will the audience feel, think, and do differently after your speech?

First of all, I want them to gain a unique perspective of themselves. A perspective that gives them a better sense of self-worth. As I’ve come to know from personal experience, the foundation of our own self-worth alone has the greatest impact on how we do everything and as a result directly effects the quality of everything we experience in life. When we feel better, we do better. And as a result, we have better experiences. Plain and simple. Once I help them with how to create that healthy perspective of themselves, I share with them simple, easy to use skills that I myself have used to garnish the experiences I myself have been able to enjoy.

To put it simply:

  • Better self-worth.
  • Better (and more focused) personal development skills.
  • Better life experiences going forward.

How will you help promote our event?

I can, upon request, promote your event on social media and AdviserSpeaks.com. If allowable, I’d prefer to create a custom blog or short video for your event page to help boost the event. And no. I don’t charge for that.

What is Paul’s ‘Why’? Why does he do what he does? Why did he start Adviser Speaks?

Paul Calhoun started Adviser Speaks back in 2007 during the housing crisis when he volunteered to help Job Seekers gain employment. He starting giving a workshop he created titled, How To Sell Yourself To Employers. During his workshop he shared some of the golden nuggets he himself was taught by a few of his mentors earlier in life. Interest in his workshop sored faster than expected. It was then that Paul realized what he’d had and that it needed to be shared with others who were looking to improve their own lives.

Simon Sinek once pointed out the importance of our ‘Why’. In this short video, Paul explains, in more detail, what his driving motivation behind Adviser Speaks is. What was it in 2007 that drove him to keep it going, long after the housing crisis ended. Or as Simon Sinek might put it, Paul’s – ‘why’.
